Around the world, democracy is under attack from authoritarian movements. Safeguarding Democracy is a community for people who want to do more than simply watch it happen.

To protect democracy effectively, we need to understand political developments, develop counter-strategies, and build pro-democracy networks. We approach this from an international and cross-partisan perspective.

Many of us are especially concerned about far-right authoritarian movements such as MAGA, the AfD, and Hindu nationalism in India. But we also oppose religious extremism, left-wing authoritarianism, and autocratic regimes such as those in Russia and China.

We’re politically diverse and open to people from across the democratic spectrum, whether progressive or conservative, left-wing or right-wing. You just have to support liberal democracy, engage in good faith, and treat others with respect.

We don't just focus on Western countries, but also have channels for other regions of the world, such as India.

The group was founded by members of the Effective Altruism and Less Wrong communities, which is why we are influenced by their core principles. However, it is not required to identify with either of them.
