We are a community dedicated to Distributism: An economic and political system that originates from Catholic Social Teaching and the Christian Democratic Tradition. It advocates for the the principles of widespread ownership, subsidiarity, and the family as the primary economic unit. Firstly we must discuss the history of Distributism as a school of thought. On May 15 1891, Pope Leo the 13th published his encyclical called Rerum novarum, which was written to address the ongoing social and economic conditions within Europe and the world as an aftermath of the industrial revolution, and spring time of nations. The relevant topics which were discussed in the encyclical were the right to private property as a natural right, rejection of both state socialism and capitalism, the rights and dignity of workers, class harmony over class struggle, and the role of Subsidiarity: which means that matters should first be handled at the smallest and most competent unit of governance, before going any further. For example a matter might first be addressed by the family, before going to their community, maybe church, then being brought up to the municipal government, and so on, until the matter is resolved. The English writer G.k Chesterton would published a series of books focusing on the human and family centered side with his most famous writing being a book titled "The Outline of Sanity", he would meet a man named Hilaire Belloc, a prominent French writer living in England, and eventually member of parliament. His writings provided hard economic critiques, in his magnum opus writing "The Servile State" he argued that unbridled capitalism will eventually lead back to a form of economic slavery unless private property was widely distributed.
